Money, money, money…. As an engineer, I was not happy.  But as a Teacher I have taught the most wonderful people of the world.  I have learn as much as I have taught.  As you get older, you will learn that you are teaching and learning everyday of your life.  And to grow in english you must learn new words everyday.  It is a blessing to teach and be friends with so many students.

I did not realize that as an engineer I was already learning to be a teacher.  When I was in Saudi Arabia for four years, at nightime I was teaching my young engineers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Philippines.  I was teaching them engineering words. By doing this I was teaching pronunciation and vocabulary.  When I went back to USA, I went to get my teaching certificates then I took a job in China and that was the first time I was paid as a teacher, “but the rewards was worth more than the money I receive”.  They are still my friends in China and always will be. I come to the Philippines to work at CIP and my friends are over two thousand students now.  They are my friends and my students and I miss them all. I wish all of them were at CIP now…

I hope to reach out for 1 million more…. so please come to CIP > meet me, be my student and friend. WE CAN LEARN THE WORLD TOGETHER!!!…..Image

I agree with all the comments that have been made and appreciate the reference to “The Story of English.” The height of British imperialism and expanse of the British holdings around the world may mark the beginning of the spread of English, but even into the 20th century French was the language of diplomacy and German the language of science. Perhaps English took on the realm of business but we’d have to look it up. Certainly, after WWII, the US seemed to take up the role of Britain in the world while all the colonial powers began to give up their global colonies. As the US was English speaking and came to dominate the world through its military presence, business, and the export of its popular culture, English gained in popularity as a means of international communication, expanding its use in diplomacy, science, culture, and arts, replacing French and German. For most of Europe, it has the advantage of melding elements of the Germanic and Romance families of languages. It has a relatively simple grammar and a huge vocabulary made up of native words and many borrowings from many world languages. In these respects, it is not a bad choice, but in fact, its widespread use is most likely the effect of the role of the US on the world stage over the past seventy years. US English readily incorporates new words. The US is an immigrant society made up of people from everywhere in the world and has been like this for over a century, and the language could be said to have a democratic, all-embracing quality that makes it attractive. I don’t want to be too much, and I am a native speaker of English, so I don’t want to betray too much bias in my feelings, but I think at least some of these factors explain the role of English as the new lingua franca. It could easily be replaced if the world changes significantly in the future. A question is which form of English enjoys the most prestige nowadays.
